Taking my first example â€" the Australian marriage equality vote.  This seemed like a quick change on the surface, but on closer examination, was actually the result of incrementalism â€" many small steps taken over the years, and a conversation that has matured over time â€" both inside our firm and outside.  Whilst it did generate debate, I was really pleased to see that at EY it was largely respectful debate â€" because many people had been educated on how to talk about LGBTI differences and issues. #MeToo was a different matter, seemingly exploding out of nowhere, simmering quietly for awhile and continuing to make impact in recent months.  While we had been talking constantly about gender equality over the past years â€" we focused on more “professional” or “developmental” themes, not the elephant in the room â€" the raw and deeper level of #MeToo issues.    We were largely unprepared for this conversation and I think that has left many of us deeply uncomfortable with having it.  Chief Executive Women and Male Champions of Change released a report a few weeks ago acknowledging backlash that has stemmed from social change on this front, but does the backlash come from the change, or from the speed of change? These examples from the past year have strengthened my belief in the power of incrementalism, but has added the understanding that the dialogue is critical.  We need to talk more about our differences, even when it make us uncomfortable.  This is a given in inclusion work, but we must also challenge ourselves on what this means at an organisational level. For example, EY has just announced new cultural diversity targets:  30% culturally and linguistically diverse partners by 2022 and that promotions above manager rank should be proportional to the cultural diversity of the current rank.  Being closer to the start of our journey to organisation-wide cultural intelligence, we need to start talking about the dynamics of culture now.  We need to bust the stereotypes but appreciate the differences in core values that culture brings and we need to recognise how much of our leadership model is based on highly westernised cultural beliefs.  We need to walk the fine line between the conversation the organisation is ready to have and the conversation it needs to have and we need to make steady, incremental progress. This is what will bring us, step by step, closer to our goal of truly inclusive workplace â€" without wasting years ignoring the elephants in the room, or being at the mercy of disruptive inclusion that potentially decelerates advancement.    Because there is no silver bullet, quick fix or game changing panacea â€" just steady, incremental progress towards our goals, at a speed everyone can take together. Preparing for the fairs as a graduate University of Manchester Careers Blog Next week our autumn fairs are taking place in Manchester Central. The Business Finance Management  fair takes place on Tuesday 20th and The Engineering, Science Technology fair takes place on Wednesday 21st.   As the events team at the Careers Service put the finishing touches to the venue and employers organise travel for their representatives it’s important that you also prepare to attend. So what do you need to be doing   and when? What you can do now Register to attend! This seams a good (and very obvious) place to start! You can register to attend the fairs on our website, just click on the fair/s you want to attend and you’ll see an option to ‘register to attend’. You can register at the venue on the day but it probably quicker and easier for you to register in advance. Research employers Recruitment fairs like these can be very hectic and it’s best to have a plan of action (or attack) before you arrive. Think about what you want out of the day are you are looking to find out more about the sector in general, graduate schemes starting in 2016 and/or employers that have immediate start jobs?   Use the exhibitor lists available for both the Business and Engineering fairs to find out which employers will be attending the fair and, what opportunities they have and whether these opportunities are suitable for you. Once you have narrowed down the employers you are interested speaking to do some more research on the companies as a whole and the opportunities that are available â€" along with graduate directors such as the Times top 100 and Guardian 300 employer websites are a great tool to do this. Prepare questions to ask These fair are a great opportunity to ask employers questions and find out more about the opportunities they have. Employers will not be impressed if you ask simple questions which could be answered by looking on their website so do your research first.   For example instead of simply asking ‘what opportunities do you have?’   You could ask ‘I’ve seen on your website you have a XXXX scheme can you tell   me a little bit more about what I would be doing on a day to day basis?’ The fairs are a great opportunity to find out the personal; experiences of the organisations employees by asking them questions such as ‘Did you start on the graduate training scheme yourself? So you’re not rushing about on the morning of the event I’d suggest getting your outfit prepared the night before and giving it a good iron if necessary. Sure enough, a new report from PwC has revealed that the gender pay gap will not be closed until 2041 in the current conditions. To put that in context, not until all the children born this year are older than I am. According to PwCs Women in Work index, working conditions for women have been steadily improving since 2000. In spite of this, the gender pay gap continues to affect women of different age, class, race and sexuality to varying degrees. The report concludes that it is unlikely that the gap will be completely closed within two decades. Shel recommends candy and workplace toys: I put a bowl of peppermint lifesavers (you can buy them in bags, individually wrapped for hygene) on my desk. Lots of people stop by and grab one which has lead to some great conversations work and other wise. I also have a Rubic?s Cube, a Magic 8 Ball, and this bizarre plastic ball made up of geometric parts that cause it to flip inside out (changing its colour) when tossed in the air, a mini Zen garden, and other items to busy one?s hands while talking or just hanging out. It?s a great way to create a relaxing atmosphere! Ive always been partial to foosball myself, but maybe thats too Silicon Valley, dot-com-boom for your workplace. Despite my sarcastic tone, I truly understand and sympathize with the place that these commenters are coming from. Many of them feel like they’ve followed the rules and did everything by the book that’s supposed to guarantee them a good job, and then at one or more points in their life they had the rug pulled from underneath them. Everything wrong with employment today, as well as everybody’s complaints about employment, all stems from an inconvenient truth about employment that no one wants to deal with. The truth is, employment has evolved to a degree that none of us were prepared for. No longer is a college degree good enough in many cases to secure even an entry-level job. No longer is ten or twenty years of service good enough to maintain further job security. No longer is networking, corporate climbing or any other tactic good enough to instantly accelerate your career. The reality is, employment is now more unstable than ever before, so in order to give yourself the greatest opportunity to excel, you must do a myriad of things, and you must be willing to stick it out for the long haul. It’s inconvenient that you may spend half a decade of your life pursuing a degree that may be obsolete or without job prospects by the time you graduate from college.
